A Pearls World - by Cara Sanders (Owlet) - Abstract Australian Art
Mix Media, 70 x 42cm
Australian Abstract Landscape painted by Cara Sanders aka Owlet Art.
The artwork was painted on the Gold Coast, inspired by the book Port of Pearls about Broome WA pearling industry in the early 1800s.
"Employed" on the boats were the Aboriginal people and the Malay's who would skindive (free diving before diving suits) and pick up shells from the bottom of the ocean floor. With the risk of being attacked by a crocodile or bitten by a shark or dying from shallow water black out. Or killed if they tried to escape. Which was not infrequent. They would be paid a wage of food and clothes because they wouldn't know what to do with the money. Even pregnant women were forced to dive at the later stages of their pregnancy.
I used oil, acrylic, paint pen and oil pastel to complete this artwork.
